I am planning to purchase a 4710, I have had a 955 and I was not very pleased with the durability of the hydro drive for extended (8 hr a day 3 day a week) work time. I currently have Kubota 4200 with the glide shift and I have had no problems. Is the ehydro tranny more durable than the 955's? Or is my solution to go with the shuttle. I will use this tractor to pull a 12 foot bat wing finish mower, roto-till, and move dirt.

There are some relevant discussions in the archives, but I suspect that the dealers who participate on this board will provide some real-world experience. Few people other than dealers are in a position to know maintenance/warranty stats as well as know what goes in and out of their shops and what owners say. The board is lucky to have their participation. Hope everybody gets some benefit from participating.
From what I recall, there's really no reason to stay away from HST unless calibrated ground speed ag operations are required. Initial purchase price and fuel economy may be issues, but HST's are supposed to have lower overall maintenance costs and they’re more desirable if a lot of loader work is required.
I do recall a possible downside to HST's. There were discussions quite awhile ago about commercially used tractors with HST. A conclusion was that HST’s with synthetic oil ran cooler during the summer that those running petro oil. From what I recall, I'm not sure whether there actually was a heat problem or the discussion was just observing that synthetics ran cooler. It's something to think about if prolonged heavy draft field operations are going to be done during hot weather. I guess whether it’s a problem or not depends on whether 4710 designers thought of it as a compact or a compact with field capabilities. Even if heat is an issue, a supplementary cooler might be a solution.

In my opinion the 4710 eHydro is an excellent choice for your applications. I have used the 4710 with both a rear rotary mower (8 ft MX8) and moving dirt with a loader. The LoadMatch feature works great in both these applications to allow you to put almost all of the tractor power into getting work done. When mowing large areas, you can set the cruise to the fastest speed you want to go, then if the grass becomes too heavy, the tractor will slow itself down to keep the engine speed up and maintain the cut quality. When using the tractor with a loader, it is impossible to stall the engine while pushing into a pile. In A range the wheels will just keep driving. In B range, you may have enough power to hit hydro relief pressure.
I also think the hydro in the 4710 is substantially more durable than in the 55 series. This is based mostly on looks (it is much beefier looking). Also note that John Deere uses this same hydro in the 110 TLB which is a much heavier tractor. Try and talk with a service manager at a dealer to get his opinion. These tractors have been out for 7-8 months now so they should be developing some reputation. I also have not seen any complaints about hydro failures on the tractor bulletin boards. ....

I had a 955 and had no trans problems - what did you run into?
I have a 4700HST now, and mow with a LP-FDR-25-84" finish mower. It bogs down on uphill runs. So a 12 ft mower sounds like a lot to power up, unless you're on flat land (what we Wisconsiners refer to Illini as - Flatlanders).

4710,does the mower have a minumin horsepower rating?I bet
it requires at least 60hp.It might work ok if your just
mowing a golf course,but I would want a gear trans.When I
mow over 3 hrs with my 4310 w/72mmm,hst,the trans and floor
board gets very warm.I would hate to see what a 12ft mower
would do to my 4310?just my 2cents....good luck ....

I work for a JD Dealership in Western, PA. the 55 series JD where all notorious for transmission problems, especially the smaller units like the 755. Ill be honest with you, either the 12x12 power reverser or the hydro on the JD4710 will be a better transmission than on your Kubota. You need to have a John Deere sitting right beside your Kubota to see the real benefits, but to answer your question, the Hydro in the 10 series is greatly improved over the hydro you had in your 955.

Hello all. I am new to this forum.The 4710 is a haus! I just procured 7 4710's for towing helicopters for the 101st Airborne Division at Ft. Campbell, KY. I just turned in the purchase request yesterday for 8 more. We use them to tow helicopters as big as CH-47D's. They can be as heavy as 50,000 lbs. but usually average around 30,000 lbs. sitting on the ramp. The ehydro will moduate the hydrostat drive with the engine to prevent overheating and also offers a form of braking with the speed match and motion match. Go with the ehydo, you will not be sorry. If you are interested in purchasing a 4710 immediately, I can put in in touch with our John Deere rep. He will give the a great price on a great tractor. I wish I could get a 4710 for what the government pays for them! In the mean time I will bide my time with the Kubota until the right deal comes along. The F525 is my creme puff but not in the tractor league. :) If you need more info. let me know. I did quite a bit of research on these tractors and they flat out spanked every other tractor in this class. ....
